Colosseum Opening Hours: Best Visiting Times for Families
Colosseum opening hours for 2026–27, last entry times, Forum and Palatine hours, holiday closures and the family schedule we would use in each season.

The Colosseum opens at 8:30 a.m. all year and the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill open at 9:00 a.m., but the closing time moves with the seasons. With children that matters more than it seems. From 1 to 24 October 2026 the park closes at 6:30 p.m., and from 25 October 2026 to 28 February 2027 it closes at 4:30 p.m., so a late Colosseum ticket in winter leaves almost no time for the Forum and Palatine.
For most families the safest plan is a morning Colosseum visit, especially if you want to add the Forum; our guide on how to plan the whole visit puts the timings into family itineraries. The ideal hour still changes by season. Prices and slots on guided tours change daily, so check live availability for your dates first:

29 March–30 September 2026
The 2026 summer schedule has ended, and the park has not yet published its hours from March 2027, so check the official opening times before you book a spring or summer 2027 visit. The 2026 figures in the table are a reasonable guide to what to expect, but they are not a promise.
Our family rule: if you want the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill on the same day, book the Colosseum in the morning. The shorter winter hours make this especially important from 25 October onwards. The Colosseum and Ancient Rome Family Tour for Kids in the date picker above covers all three sites with a child-friendly guide and rates 4.8/5 from 349 reviews.
Short winter afternoons leave time for something else once the park closes. An illuminated Rome tour for kids with gelato and pizza (4.8/5 from 67 reviews) runs after dark, and below are more family ideas around the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Vatican Museums and the catacombs on the Appian Way:
What time does the Colosseum open?
The Colosseum opens at 8:30 a.m., which makes the first few morning slots useful for families in warm weather. An early visit gives you cooler temperatures, fresher children, a calmer start to the sightseeing day, time for a break before the Forum, and the option to stop if the children have had enough after the Colosseum.
You do not have to book the very first slot. For many families, 9:00–10:00 a.m. is a good compromise between an early start and a realistic breakfast.
What time does the Roman Forum open?
The Roman Forum–Palatine area opens at 9:00 a.m. In theory you can visit the Forum first and the Colosseum later, and that can work. With children we usually prefer the opposite order:
- the Colosseum first
- a short break
- the Roman Forum
- Palatine Hill, only if everyone still has energy.
The Colosseum is the easiest part of Ancient Rome for children to understand, so use their best attention on it. Our guide to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill with kids has routes through all three.
What is the last entry time?
Last admission is an hour before the park closes:
- 1–24 October 2026: 5:30 p.m.
- 25 October 2026–28 February 2027: 3:30 p.m.
- in summer 2026 (29 March–30 September) it was 6:15 p.m.
Do not confuse last admission with closing time. If the park closes at 4:30 p.m., you cannot turn up at 4:15 and start a normal visit. Your entry has to be earlier.
How long can you stay inside the Colosseum?
The standard official Colosseum ticket allows a visit of up to 75 minutes inside the monument, and some Full Experience tickets allow up to 90 minutes. That gives you a useful planning rule: with a 10:00 a.m. standard ticket, expect to leave the Colosseum at about 11:00–11:15 a.m. Our guide to what you will see in those 75 minutes suggests a simple route.
Once you add security, walking, toilets, photos and children stopping to look at things, the whole Ancient Rome outing takes longer than the ticket time suggests.
What time should families arrive?
For a standard ticket, aim to be at the entrance about 15 minutes before your booked Colosseum time. Arriving an hour early will not get you in early: the Colosseum uses timed admission, and you cannot walk in at a different time from the one on your ticket.
Example
With a 9:30 a.m. booking, a good arrival target is 9:10–9:15 a.m. That leaves time to find the right entrance, get your tickets ready, show ID for the children and go through security.
Guided tours may have an earlier meeting time
If you book through GetYourGuide, Viator or another operator, follow the operator’s meeting time, not the Colosseum time printed on the underlying ticket. A tour may ask you to meet 15, 20 or 30 minutes before, because the guide needs to check names, verify IDs, hand out headsets, split groups and walk everyone to the entrance.
Build this into the day. A 9:00 a.m. tour can mean leaving your accommodation much earlier than a 9:00 a.m. independent ticket would.
Best opening-hour strategy in summer
For June, July and August we would book 8:30–9:30 a.m. if possible. The main reason is heat more than crowds. The Colosseum has some shade, but the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are much more exposed. If your family starts the Colosseum at 1:00 p.m., you may reach the Forum just as everyone is hot, hungry, tired and least interested in Roman ruins. An early start avoids that.
Sample summer family schedule
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 8:30 a.m. | Enter the Colosseum |
| 9:45 a.m. | Finish the Colosseum |
| 10:00–10:30 a.m. | Drink, snack, toilet, sit down |
| 10:30–11:30 a.m. | Roman Forum |
| 11:30 a.m.–12:15 p.m. | Palatine Hill, if everyone still has energy |
| 12:30 p.m. | Leave for lunch |
That is much easier than starting the same itinerary after midday.
Best opening-hour strategy in September
In 2026 September kept the long summer hours, with the park closing at 7:15 p.m. until 30 September. That gives you more flexibility. Morning stays our first choice with younger children, but an afternoon Colosseum visit can work well if the children are older, the temperature is comfortable and you are not trying to do the whole Forum afterwards.
Good September options
- Family doing the Colosseum and the Forum: 9:00–10:30 a.m. entry.
- Family doing the Colosseum only: late afternoon can be excellent.
What changes on 1 October?
From 1 October 2026 the park closes earlier, at 6:30 p.m., with last admission at 5:30 p.m. That still leaves room for a late-afternoon Colosseum visit, but less margin for the Forum afterwards. If your family wants the Colosseum, the Forum and the Palatine, choose the morning.
The big change: 25 October
This is the date families should notice. From 25 October 2026 the winter schedule begins: the park closes at 4:30 p.m. and last admission is 3:30 p.m. That is nearly three hours earlier than the 2026 summer closing. A 2:30 p.m. Colosseum ticket sounds like an afternoon visit, but in winter it is close to the end of the day. If you also want the Roman Forum, book much earlier.
Best winter Colosseum time with kids
From 25 October to 28 February our preferred family window is 9:30–11:30 a.m. There is less reason to go at 8:30 in winter, because you no longer need to dodge afternoon heat. A slightly later start means an easier breakfast, warmer air, better light and still enough time before the 4:30 p.m. closing. For families with younger children, 10:00 a.m. can be almost ideal.
Sample winter family schedule
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 9:45 a.m. | Arrive |
| 10:00–11:15 a.m. | Colosseum |
| 11:15–11:45 a.m. | Snack, toilet, break |
| 11:45 a.m.–1:00 p.m. | Roman Forum |
| 1:00–1:45 p.m. | Palatine Hill, if everyone is still enjoying it |
| 2:00 p.m. | Lunch |
This leaves a comfortable buffer before the archaeological park closes.
Why a 3:00 p.m. winter Colosseum ticket is risky for families
It can work, but it removes almost all flexibility. If your children love the visit and want to keep exploring, the park is about to close. If security or tour check-in runs slowly, you lose more of your time. If you planned to use the Forum entry on your ticket afterwards, you may not manage it.
A late winter slot suits you best when you are visiting the Colosseum only, when the Forum and Palatine are planned for another day or already done, or when your trip leaves no alternative.
Can you visit the Roman Forum before the Colosseum?
Often, yes. The standard 24-hour ticket gives one timed Colosseum visit and one entry to the Roman Forum–Palatine area, and the official ticket page says the Arena ticket’s Forum entry can be used within 24 hours before or after your Colosseum time. Check the conditions printed for your own ticket type before you plan the Forum first.
This helps when your Colosseum time is late. With a 2:00 p.m. Colosseum booking, for example, you could enter the Forum around 9:30–10:00, explore, have lunch and then walk to the Colosseum. That can work for older children; for younger ones we still prefer the Colosseum first.
Standard ticket vs Full Experience opening-hour strategy
The standard ticket works within a 24-hour window. Full Experience tickets, such as Full Experience Arena or Underground + Arena, are valid for two consecutive days, which gives families a big advantage: you can split Ancient Rome in two.
Day 1
The Colosseum with special access.
Day 2
The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
Splitting the visit takes most of the pressure off the closing time. Our page on Colosseum tickets for families explains each ticket.
Is the Colosseum open on Mondays?
Yes. The Colosseum has no weekly closing day. Many Italian museums close on Mondays, and families sometimes assume the Colosseum does the same. Check the official site for one-off closures or route changes, but Monday is an ordinary opening day.
Is the Colosseum open on Sundays?
Yes. The first Sunday of each month is different, because admission to the archaeological park is free that day and the ticket process can change from the usual pre-booked timed entry: tickets may be handed out at the ticket office in order of arrival. For a family, free admission can come with a less predictable day. The full list of free days is in our guide to Colosseum ticket prices for adults and children.
Is the Colosseum open on Christmas Day?
No. The official schedule lists the Colosseum Archaeological Park as closed on 25 December 2026. If you are in Rome over Christmas, plan something else for that day.
Is the Colosseum open on New Year’s Day?
No. The official schedule lists 1 January 2027 as closed, so do not plan a New Year’s Day visit.
Is it open on Christmas Eve?
The current published schedule does not list 24 December as a closure. Special arrangements can still change, so if your trip falls on 24 or 31 December, a public holiday or a special-event date, check the official site shortly before you go.
What about night opening?
In 2026 the park ran its official A Night at the Colosseum series on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 July to 29 September, from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. with last admission at 9:50 p.m. The guided route lasted about 60 minutes and covered the first tier, the arena floor and the underground. Tickets cost €50 full price and €28 reduced, and children under 6 went free. The 2026 series has ended, and the park has not yet announced dates for 2027.
Night visits run outside the normal daytime hours and are sold only through the official Colosseum ticketing system, so you will not find them as a standard daytime slot.
Is the night tour good for families?
For older children, teenagers and families who enjoy atmospheric evening sightseeing, it can be a good choice if it runs again. For toddlers and young children with early bedtimes, probably not.
Morning opening vs night tour
The two suit different families.
Morning visit
Best for younger children, a first visit, families combining the Forum and Palatine, and summer.
Night visit
Best for teenagers, repeat visitors, families who want the arena and underground, and anyone who prefers a shorter specialist visit.
Do not choose a night tour only to escape daytime crowds if it clashes badly with your children’s routine.
How long should you allow for the full Ancient Rome area?
| Part of the visit | Time to allow |
|---|---|
| Colosseum | 60–75 minutes |
| Break | 20–45 minutes |
| Roman Forum | 45–75 minutes |
| Palatine Hill | 30–60 minutes |
| Total | Roughly 2.5–4 hours |
The total depends on your children’s ages, whether you have a guide, the weather, how interested everyone is and how much of the Palatine you do. This is why opening hours matter: a 3:30 p.m. last admission in winter is no time to start a four-hour Ancient Rome day.
What is the best slot for a 3-hour guided tour?
If the tour covers the Colosseum, the Forum and the Palatine, we would start at:
Summer
8:30–9:30 a.m.
Spring / early autumn
9:00–10:00 a.m.
Winter
9:30–10:30 a.m.
That gives the guide enough time to finish the route without racing the heat or the closing time. Our pick on GetYourGuide is the Rome: Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill Tour for Kids, from $341 per person and rated 4.9/5 from 69 reviews. For a lower price, the Rome for Kids: Colosseum and Roman Forum Tour starts at $125 and rates 4.7/5 from 75 reviews.
What is the best slot for Colosseum-only tickets?
You have much more freedom.
Summer
Early morning or later afternoon.
October
Morning, early afternoon, or later afternoon if you are not doing the Forum.
Winter
Late morning or early afternoon.
If the Colosseum is your only archaeological site that day, you do not need to chase the very first slot.
What is the best time for arena-floor access?
Arena access works at almost any time of day. What matters more is what the tour includes afterwards. If your arena tour also covers the Forum and Palatine, book earlier; if it is mainly the Colosseum and the arena, a later slot is comfortable.
Our pick on GetYourGuide is the Colosseum Arena Floor, Roman Forum & Palatine Tour, rated 4.7/5 from more than 2,600 reviews. Our guide to the Colosseum arena floor with kids explains what children see there.
What is the best time for Underground access?
Underground places are much more limited, so for families a good available slot usually beats waiting for a perfect hour.
Summer
Earlier is still better.
Winter
Late morning works very well.
Teenagers
Be flexible if the best small-group tour is available at another time.
Our pick on GetYourGuide: the Colosseum, Underground, Roman Forum & Palatine Tour, capped at seven people and rated 5.0/5 from 92 reviews. Our guide to Colosseum underground tours with kids compares more options.
Do ticket offices close before the site?
The official site gives no separate ticket-office hours, and last admission comes an hour before closing, so do not plan to buy tickets on site late in the day. Since 4 May 2026 the park has sold standard 24-hour tickets at its Piazza del Colosseo ticket office, subject to availability. The Colosseum still runs on timed entry, so if the visit matters to your trip, reserve beforehand.
How far ahead do tickets open?
Timed Colosseum tickets generally go on sale 30 days before the visit date, and some specialist products have their own release rules. For families:
- choose your preferred day
- decide your ideal time range
- check the rules for your ticket type
- book as soon as its window opens.
Morning slots are in demand in the warm months. Our guide to skip-the-line Colosseum tickets for families covers the booking steps.
Can you change your entry time later?
Do not book a time casually assuming you can turn up whenever you like. The official FAQ says you cannot enter at a different time from the one booked. Before booking, check your breakfast plans, transport, hotel location, other timed attractions, naps and restaurant reservations. The ticket time should shape the day.
How much buffer should families leave before the Colosseum?
If you are travelling independently in central Rome, aim to be in the Colosseum area 20–30 minutes before your ticket time. That does not mean standing in the entry queue for half an hour. It gives you time for wrong turns, toilet emergencies, finding the entrance and getting the tickets ready, before you go to the entrance about 15 minutes ahead. On a guided tour, use the operator’s meeting time instead.
Avoid scheduling the Vatican immediately before the Colosseum
This is one of the easiest mistakes to make. Both sites are large, crowded and timed, and both can run longer than expected. A plan where the Vatican tour ends at 12:30 and the Colosseum ticket is for 1:00 does not work with children: you need travel time, food and a buffer, and the Colosseum will not move your fixed entry time to suit an overloaded day.
Best family schedule if the Colosseum is your first attraction
This is our favourite structure:
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morning | Colosseum, plus the Forum if you want it |
| Lunch | A proper sit-down break |
| Afternoon | Something gentler: a piazza, a fountain, a park, gelato, a neighbourhood walk or a hands-on activity |
It stops Ancient Rome from using up every bit of the family’s energy.
Best family schedule if the Colosseum is your afternoon attraction
Keep the morning light:
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morning | Slow breakfast and the Trevi Fountain and Pantheon area |
| Lunch | Early lunch |
| 2:00–3:30 p.m. | Colosseum |
| Afterwards | A short walk and dinner |
This works well in spring, in early October and with older children. It suits winter less well if you still want the Forum.
What if the only tickets left are late?
Take the late slot if the alternative is missing the Colosseum altogether, and adjust your expectations. Do not try to squeeze the Colosseum, the Forum, the Palatine and another attraction into the remaining hours. Make the Colosseum the main event, and come back to Ancient Rome on another day if your itinerary allows.
Does rain affect opening hours?
Ordinary rain does not close the Colosseum. Severe weather or safety issues can cause temporary route restrictions, especially in special-access areas. If the weather is poor, check the official site and any operator messages, allow extra time, and do not assume the Underground or other restricted sections will be open. The Forum and Palatine are usually less pleasant in heavy rain than the Colosseum itself.
Family-friendly timing mistakes to avoid
1. Booking the last winter slot and expecting to do the Forum afterwards
There may not be enough time.
2. Booking an 8:30 slot when your family never leaves the hotel before 9:00
The best slot is no use if you miss it.
3. Scheduling lunch too close to entry
Italian restaurant service may not match a tight timetable.
4. Doing another huge museum immediately beforehand
The children arrive tired before the main visit starts.
5. Forgetting the operator check-in time
A 10:00 Colosseum tour may meet at 9:30.
6. Treating closing time as last entry
Last admission is an hour earlier.
7. Entering the Forum just before children need lunch
The Forum–Palatine part of the ticket is usually a single entry to one connected area, so you cannot pop out for lunch and come back.
Our preferred Colosseum times by season
| Season | Family sweet spot |
|---|---|
| Summer | 8:30–9:30 a.m. |
| September | 9:00–10:00 a.m. |
| 1–24 October | 9:00–10:30 a.m. |
| 25 October–February | 9:30–11:00 a.m. |
| Spring | 9:00–10:30 a.m. |
These are our recommendations, not official rules. The right time for you depends on your children’s ages, the weather, ticket availability, whether the Forum and Palatine are included and your family’s natural routine. Our guide to the best time to visit the Colosseum with kids has a slot for every month.

The bottom line
The Colosseum opens at 8:30 a.m. all year, but its closing time changes with the season. The dates that matter most for families are 1–24 October 2026, when the park closes at 6:30 p.m., and 25 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, when it closes at 4:30 p.m. That late-October change is the one to plan the day around.
In summer, visit early because of the heat. In winter you can start a little later, but do not book the Colosseum too late if you also want the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. For most families our favourite slot is around 9:00–10:00 a.m.: the children see the Colosseum while they are fresh, you stop for a break, and then you decide whether Ancient Rome still has everyone’s attention.
Plan for enough time for your children to enjoy the ruins, even if that means fewer of them. Compare current tour times in the date picker at the top of this page, or browse all our Colosseum tours for kids and families.
